Edition "définitive" des aventures de la "créature des marais" de B. Wrightson, un des Maîtres étazunien du dessin au pinceau à l'encre de chine, mort en 2017. Très belle édition qui reprend dans l'ordre chronologique tous les épisodes parus : c'est l'occasion de redécouvrir ce travail magistral ( en fait, c 'est l'occasion de le découvrir, tant la publication dans l'écho des savanes fut chaotique et incomplète). Bonne traduction, bonne impression , et un excellent dossier en fin d'ouvrage ; plus de 300 pages à dévorer ! ( petit mot d'humeur : pourquoi avoir cité en gros au dos de l'ouvrage A. Moore? Cette œuvre n'a absolument rien à voir avec les élucubrations politico-bien pensantes de l'hirsute Anglais) !
After reviewing the incredibly awesome SDCC Swamp Thing figure, I just had to take the time to review the trade of the stories that inspired its creation. This is it- the one that started it all- the first 11 stories that introduced the world to the most famous swamp creature of all time, a horror and comic icon that became a household name, whose genesis through the years led to several runs by comic greats such as the legendary Alan Moore, which changed not only horror comics, but the entire comics landscape forever, leading to mature-themed comics of sophisticated suspense that gave birth to the Vertigo imprint, setting a higher standard for the genre, and for readers that had tasted the best, and now wanted more from their comics. Though much of that can be attributed to the visionary work of the incomparable Alan Moore, the seeds were first planted here- everything Moore creatively built upon was first established here, in these stories by other legends of their field, the talented comic creator Len Wein and legendary horror artist Berni Wrightson. This volume contains not only the first 10 issues of the now-classic Wein/Wrightson Swamp Thing run, but also the nine-page story from DC's horror anthology House of Secrets #92, the first ever, and wonderfully gothic turn-of-the-century tale of Swamp Thing. In my opinion, there are two great horror comics- and that is DC's Swamp Thing, and Marvel's Tomb of Dracula, which featured the equally talented & legendary team of Marv Wolfman & Gene Colan. These ST stories collected in this volume, in my mind, exemplify everything a horror comic should be, and the work of Wein/Wrightson is just as deserving of praise as the works of Moore, Veitch & others, and after you read it you'll understand why. Though Moore would masterfully add more complexity to everyone's favorite muck-encrusted mockery of a man, these stories show the beginning of his origins, and shows Swampy's true roots, which Moore expanded upon. For those just getting into Swamp Thing, this is where it starts. Get this collection and enjoy it, and then move on to Moore's trades, and you will not be disappointed, as you will see the book evolve from a gothic horror tale, to the story of a man struggling with the fact that he has been turned into a "monster", only to face horrors far greater in his quest to find his place in the world, to his evolution into a powerful elemental being chosen to represnt the Earth itself in Moore's awesome metaphysical run. However, make no mistake, it all begins here, with the story that introduces one of the greatest horror comic characters of all time. This book contains some of my favorite stories, outside of Moore's, and exemplify much of why I love Swamp Thing. The true strength is in the combo of Wein/Wrightson--they made an awesome team, and this book shows why. Wein's narratives are incredibly descriptive, with a very gothic overtone, lyrical in their way, and laced with gothic fantasy, and along with Wrightson's artwork make the stories, the characters, and the environs therein feel strikingly real. His narrtives go perfectly with Wrightson's art. Anyone that knows Wrightson, knows he is a horror legend, illustrating a wonderful reprint of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and also know for the creatures and creeps he conjured up in books like Creepy. His design for Swampy is definitive to me, and all the horrifying creatures- from Arcane's hideous Un-Men, to the Frankensteinian Patchwork Man, to a slavering werewolf, to the Lovecraftian horror called M'Nagalah, show his skill. There is a certain eeriness that is pervasive in all his artwork- even in the scenes that don't have macabre creatures in them, that just show normal interactions between the "human" characters, there is still this creepy feeling, like a dark sense of foreshadowing,like a shadow creeping into the panels, making you feel that at any moment anything horrifying could happen--and when it does, you're in for a terrifying treat. I'm going to start out by breaking down the issues contained in this volume--giving you a taste of what's to come, but not revealing too much of the suspense contained in these skillfully-crafted stories.The first tale in this collection is the first-ever Swamp Thing story from House of Secrets #92. When this story was first released in the 70's, it made this little horror book outsell big names like Superman and Batman the month it was published- and after reading it, there is no question as to why. This story isn't about Alec Holland, but about Alex Olsen, the first Swamp Thing, and takes place around the turn-of-the-century. This story shows the strength of Wein/Wrightson's pairing, the perfect combo of narrative and art. It is very much a gothic horror tale, an American gothic horror tale- the story has a feeling similar to that of the classic Hammer horror films. In nine pages, we are told a tale of love, death, tragedy and betrayal, as a man is seperated from his beloved wife by the betrayal of one he believed a friend, a betrayal which resulted not only in his death, but also in his rebirth as a shambling, muck-encrusted mockery of himself rising from the Lousiana swamps, keeping sane only in his desire to be reunited with his love, and his desire to protect her from the same treacherous soul that ended his life and condemned him to this living hell- yet knowing his state as a Swamp Thing will leave him forever seperated from the life he knew and the woman he loves, just as strongly as the veil between life and death, no matter what. It is a story that has an emotional impact on so many levels, and if you walk away from this story not having some kind of emotion stirred, there's something wrong. It's a testament to the skill of Wein/Wrightson that they were able to put so much into these 9 pages. I'm eternally grateful that this story, and the character of Alex Olsen, was revisited and brought into continuity by Alan Moore during his ST run.The second story is the first issue of the ongoing Swamp Thing series, aptly entitled "Dark Genesis". This features the genesis of a new Swamp Thing set in the modern era, but retaining many of the elements of gothic horror found in the original story. This story is the Swamp Thing origin all ST fans are familiar with; Alec Holland, brilliant botanist, who, along with his wife, Linda, goes to a lab in the swamp to wor on a biorestorative formula that could end world hunger, only to find themselves harrassed by agents of the crimial combine called the Conclave, headed by the mysterious Mr. E, who seeks the formula for their own nefarious purposes. When the Hollands refues, they plant a bomb in the lab- exploding with Alec inside, dousing him with the formula as he ran burning into the swamp- only for the chemicals to combine with properties of the swamp to cause him to be reborn, rising from the muck and the mire as a Swamp Thing. When Linda is also killed, the creature that was once Alec Holland seeks vengeance upon her murderers, only to be blamed by government agent Matt Cable for not only Linda's death, but his own- and, unable to fully vocalize, the man-monster that was once Holland has no choice but to run, trying to find his place in the world and deal with the horror of his condition. Throughout the stories, we see the humanity of the so-called "monster"- even though he has become this creature of plant matter, muck & slime, the spirit of Alec Holland is a strong force, making him the "everyman" we root for in the increasingly horrifying situation that has become his everyday life.The third installment, "The Man Who Wanted Forever" from ST #2, introduces Swamp Thing's greatest foe- the most evil man in the world Anton Arcane. This is Arcane as he was truly meant to be- an aged, long-lived, wicked scientist/necromancer who seeks true immortality, and believes that Swampy's powerful body is the key. He sends his own creations, made from synthetic experiments and those of human tissue, the famous Un-Men- all hideously deformed as masterfully depicted by Wrightson, who overpower our swamp-dwelling protagonist and bring him to Transylvania, where he first encounters Arcane, and where Holland is given a chance at humanity--but at the cost of the Swamp Thing's powerful body being animated by the most evil mind in the world, forcing Alec to chose between his humanity or giving it up to stop the deranged Arcane, who intends to use ST's body to lash out at the world.The fourth story, from Swamp Thing #3, "The Patchwork Man", introduces us to another character important to the Swamp Thing mythos- Abigail Arcane, the beautiful, gentle niece of the evil Anton Arcane, who in this story becomes involved with Matt Cable, who came to Transylvania in his relentless pursuit of the Swamp Thing. As true ST fans know Abby would go on to become more important to ST's story, becoming his love and his wife, and in my opinion one of the unsung sexiest female characters in comics. We are also introduced to the Patchwork Man, a Frankenstein-like creature that isn't truly a menace, but in many ways, a kindred spirit akin to Swamp Thing himself- he is in fact Abby's father, Gregori Arcane, who fell victim to his brother's sadistic and unholy experiments after being mortally injured. The patchwork creature seeks to protect his daughter, his mind jumbled and confused, leading to him being pursued by Matt Cable and the villagers, and a brief encounter with Swampy, until the two man-monster's work together to save Abby's life, but not without cost. Another great story that feels like a modern Hammer film, and makes you feel deeply for the so-called "monsters" of the story.The fifth story, from Swamp Thing #4, "Monster of the Moors", is another favorite of mine, as it is a werewolf story, and I am a sucker for werewolf stories. I blame my childhood years of watching the Wolfman lol! In this story, Swampy & company(Swampy secretly hitched a ride on Matt & Abby's plane), crash in the Scottish moors- and at the worst time possible, the full moon, as a bloodthirsty werewolf stalks the moors- a tortured soul who, in his human guise despises what he is, but is surrounded by those who seek to free him of his curse, by any means necessary, regardless of the cost. Swampy once again rescues Matt Cable, the man pursuing him, along with Abby- and what could be cooler that a swamp creature battling a werewolf? Especially when the werewolf is redndering especially horrifying, with blood-red eyes and slavering jaws by Wrightson. It culminates ina a showdown between Swamp Thing & Were-beast, an awesome struggle that is memorable for having Swampy use a giant silver chandelier like a mace. However, for those cursed with lycanthropy, there's only one way the story can end...The 6th installment, from Swamp Thing #5, "The Last of the Ravenwind Witches", is a story that is much more than its title suggests. Swampy washes up on the shores of a New England community that has practically been frozen in time since the days of the witch trials, and finds that he must help Rebecca Ravenwind and her young, simple brother Timothy, who are being pursued by the overzealous, superstitious townsfolk who believe that Rebecca is last in the line of the Ravenwind witches, whose ancestor placed a curse upon the town as she was burned at the stake. However, is Rebecca truly a witch, or is she the target of the hatred and superstition of ignorant villagers? Swampy must get t the bottom of this mystery- and the truth will surprise you, as the story has a twist ending that will definitely have your mind spinning.The 7th feature, "A Clockwork Horror", from Swamp Thing #6, is a great story, though a bit of a departure from what has been before, with an excellent title that just gets stuck in your head. Swampy finds himself in a town that looks like a Swiss village, in the middle of Vermont. However, things get even stranger, as he finds the town's inhabitants are indeed unique- and that one of them is seemingly none other than Linda Holland, his deceased wife! As Swampy meets the town's unassuming Mayor Klochmann, a Swiss transplant, the mystery deepens, as Matt & Abby's path crosses Swampy's again, as they have come investigating the town's secret- but they are followed by agents of the Conclave- the ones responsible for the death of Linda and Alec's condition, leading to a showdown that's been brewing since issue #1, as Swampy battles a mechanical monstrosity in an unforgettable battle in this peculiar town, as the secrets of its inhabitants and their mayor are brought to light amidst the chaos.Next up is the appropriately titled "Night of the Bat", featuring a guest appearance by none other than the Dark Knight himself, as Swamp Thing tracks the Conclave to Gotham City, and travels there to rescue Matt & Abby, who have been captured by them. In the meantime, Batman has also been trying to shut down the Conclave's operation, and learn the identity of the enigmatic Mr. E, to no avail- without realizing that he knows Mr. E, in his Bruce Wayne identity. Though on separate missions, Swampy and the Caped Crusader find their paths crossing as it al culminates not only to a confrontation between our favorite swamp-dweller and the Caped Crusader, but also to the final stand against the Conclave, as Mr. E's identity is revealed, and Swampy is able to gain some level of justice for Linda's death and his own condition. Wrightson does a great rendition of the Dark Knight, and Len Wein writes him perfectly, a determined crusader of justice and vegeance with wry humor, seldom seen in modern Batman stories- alot of people don't like guest-appearances from super-heroes in horror comics, but Batman's appearance here is a welcome one, and it is awesome to see Swampy on the shadowed streets of Gotham City.The next story is another of my favorites, "The Lurker from Tunnel 13" from issue 8, or, as I call it, "Swampy goes Lovecraft". When you read the story you'll see why. Swampy, trying to make his way home from Gotham, arrives in an abandonded mining town named Perdition, and we see what is terrible about the town and its people isn't just on the surface, but beneath it- something terrible and inhuman lurks in Tunnel 13, an eldritch horror threatening the world- an abomination called M'Nagalah the Eternal, the Black One, the Cancer god- one of the Great Old Ones from Lovecraft lore, and this thing is a sight to behold, providing one of the most disturbing and horrifying visuals in the entire book. I'm a huge fan of Lovecraft, so this issue was perfect for me, as it was positively Lovecraftian in every aspect.Issue #9, "The Stalker from Beyond" has some sentimental value for me, as it was one of the first ST issues I ever obtained as a kid from a back issue bin at a comics store. Swampy returns home to Louisiana, to find that an alien being has crashlanded in the swamp and is using the Holland;s old barn lad to repair his damaged ship. However, Swampy isn't the only one who becomes aware of the alien visitor's arrival, as government agents, with Matt Cable as a liason, are sent to intercept and capture the alien. However, the soldiers are just as willing to destroy the alien, believing it to be a threat, simply because they don't understand it. It's a tragic story, that shows us who the true monster is- and it isn't our alien visitor. It also makes Matt Cable rethink his own overzealous, single-minded pursuit of the Swamp Thing, and gives the reader alot to think about as well, especially concerning misconceptions and bigotry, hating something simply because it is different.Then they saved one of the best for last- Wrightson's last issue on Swamp Thing- "The Man Who Would Not Die." It is appropriately titled as if feautres the return of Swampy's greatesst foe, Arcane, from the dead- in a monstrous, hideous form that reflects the evil truly within him. He isn't alone, bringing with him surviving Un-Men, and determined to gain revenge, and what he believes is rightfully his- Swamp Thing's body. However, Swampy's struggle with Arcane isn't the only thing going on in this story- there's much more going on beyond the surface. Namely, Swampy learns of a story surrounding a haunted graveyard, said to be haunted by the restless spirits of slaves who had suffered terrible cruelties in their time, and made certain they would never rest so long as a man like the one who made them suffer threatened innocent lives. It is on this graveyard that Swampy's battle against Arcane- such an evil soul- takes place, and where Arcane's evil awaken these restless spirits, seeking justice- it is this detail which evolves the story from a simple Swampy vs. Arcane story to a fascinating Southern ghost story. Like I said, they saved one of the best stories for last, and that's saying something with this awesome collection of stories- and the perfect way to end the collection.After issue 10, Wrightson departed from the book, and would be truly missed- however, the feel of the book would be kept for a time by Wein himself, alongside underappreciated artist Nestor Redondo, but Wein would leave the book by issue 13, and the original Swamp Thing run wouldn't be the same after that. Swamp Thing would be truly revitalized in the 80s, when Wein, then editor, chose Alan Moore to helm the book- returning the book and character to greatness, and new heights of graphic horror, suspense and storytelling.These stories are viewed as classics to this day, and after reading them, you'll understand why. These are the building blocks from which Swamp Thing started, and fantastic stories on their own merits, combining gothic horror, sci-fi and fantasy elements to create a comic legend that endures to this day. So grab your best hip-boots and mosquito-netting, as this book takes you to the balmy Lousiana swamps to witness the birth of the Swamp Thing, and join the muck-encrusted man-monster on the beginning of his both equally awe-inspiring and terrifying adventures.
My Swamp Thing fandom began with seeing the movies and TV series as a teenager. I recently decided to start collecting the trade paperbacks, starting with this one. The original short story is quite reminiscent of Edgar Allen Poe's works. Gothic and somber, it's easy to see why the book it appeared in sold so well.The remainder of the book's stories, taken from the regular Swamp Thing series, maintain the dark tone but add a ton of creativity and fun. Swamp Thing is relentlessly pursued by Cable (who here is not nearly as pretty as Adrienne Barbeau), and encounters all manner of strange situations and foes. The dialog is phenomenal, especially for the time period, and the art is rather sharp too.Allen Moore's take on Swamp Thing may be the best-remembered, but Len Wein's run is simpler, more action-packed, and just plain fun.
Great read but wish the entire original run was included or that there was a volume two that finished out the original storyline.
This GN was in great shape when I got it. Which is amazing since it was printed in 1992. Excellent condition. What can I say. The GN comprises the first ten comics of the Swamp Thing series by the great Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson.
